AICTE – YOUTH UNDERTAKING VISIT FOR ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE (YUVAK): STUDY TOUR OF ATAL TUNNEL, HIMACHAL PRADESH
About AICTE – YOUTH UNDERTAKING VISIT FOR ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE (YUVAK): STUDY TOUR OF ATAL TUNNEL, HIMACHAL PRADESH
On 21 May 2021, AICTE rolled out the Youth Undertaking Visit for Acquiring Knowledge (YUVAK) scheme, funding a team of one faculty member and 10 students from AICTE-approved institutions to take a study tour of the Atal Tunnel.
Objectives:
- Gain first-hand knowledge of the latest tunnel-construction techniques, especially the New Austrian Tunnelling Method.
- Understand the risks and challenges the project faced, and how they were resolved — covering excavation during heavy winter snowfall, blasting and digging through unstable rock, aligning the tunnel while digging from both ends, tunnelling across more than 46 avalanche-prone sites near the approaches, disposing of huge volumes of excavated rock and soil, constant dewatering against heavy water ingress, mudslides, landslides, and more.
- Raise the standard of engineering education nationally and build a culture of research and innovation among students.
- Motivate engineering students to advance in their technical education.
