BUSINESS & SELF-EMPLOYMENT

1. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)

PMMY supports eligible income-generating micro-enterprises through participating banks and other lending institutions. It can cover eligible term-loan and working-capital needs for manufacturing, trading, services and certain allied agricultural activities.

Loan categories

  • Shishu: up to ₹50,000
  • Kishor: above ₹50,000 and up to ₹5 lakh
  • Tarun: above ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh
  • Tarun Plus: above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh, for eligible borrowers who have successfully repaid a previous Tarun loan

These are scheme categories, not a guarantee of approval. The lender determines the sanction, interest rate, tenure and other terms under applicable rules.

Who may consider it?

How to proceed

  1. Prepare a clear business purpose and estimated cost.
  2. Contact a participating bank, small finance bank, NBFC or other eligible lending institution.
  3. Submit the lender's application and supporting documents.
  4. Review the written offer, charges and repayment schedule before accepting.

FARMERS & AGRICULTURE

2. Kisan Credit Card (KCC)

KCC is a revolving credit facility designed to provide eligible farmers timely institutional credit for cultivation and other permitted agricultural needs. The facility has also been extended to eligible animal-husbandry and fisheries activities.

What it may cover

  • Eligible crop-production expenses and agricultural inputs
  • Permitted post-harvest and marketing needs
  • Working capital for eligible allied agricultural activities
  • Other uses specifically allowed under current KCC guidelines

Credit limits, collateral requirements and interest support depend on current government guidelines, the type of activity, sanctioned limit and lender assessment. Do not assume every borrower receives the same rate.

Who may be eligible?

Eligible owner-cultivators and other recognised farming arrangements, including qualifying tenant farmers, sharecroppers, joint-liability groups or self-help groups, subject to the bank's applicable rules. Separate conditions apply to allied activities.

How to apply

  1. Contact a participating bank, Regional Rural Bank or eligible cooperative institution.
  2. Ask for the KCC application and current document checklist for your activity.
  3. Provide requested identity, address, land/tenancy or activity details and bank information.
  4. Confirm the sanctioned limit, interest, repayment dates and any applicable interest benefit in writing.

STREET VENDORS

3. PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi)

  • Second loan: up to ₹25,000, subject to scheme conditions

How to proceed

  1. Use the official PM SVANidhi portal to review the current process.
  2. Check the requirements for vendor identification and the application route in your area.

NEW MICRO-ENTERPRISES

5. Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

PMEGP is a credit-linked subsidy programme intended to support eligible new micro-enterprises. It is not a universal cash grant: applications are assessed under programme guidelines and financing is handled through participating institutions.

What applicants should understand

  • It is intended for eligible new projects, subject to scheme restrictions.
  • Project cost ceilings, applicant contribution, subsidy rate and eligible activities vary by the applicable rules and applicant category.
  • Subsidy is handled under programme conditions; it should not be treated as cash paid upfront to every applicant.
  • Existing units and certain activities may be ineligible under the guidelines.

Application preparation

  1. Read the current eligibility rules and project restrictions.
  2. Prepare a viable project report and cost estimates.
  3. Use the official PMEGP application route and submit the required records.
  4. Complete lender appraisal and any mandatory training or verification applicable to the case.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

6. Stand-Up India and other entrepreneur-credit options

Stand-Up India was designed to support greenfield enterprises promoted by eligible women and SC/ST entrepreneurs through bank finance. Scheme timelines and successor announcements can change, so applicants should confirm whether applications are currently being accepted under this route before relying on older descriptions.

Before applying

  • Check the latest status and current eligibility directly with the Department of Financial Services and the authorised portal or bank.
  • For a new enterprise, confirm whether the activity qualifies as a greenfield project under the applicable rules.
  • Ask about own contribution, margin money, collateral or guarantee arrangements, repayment tenure and all charges.
  • Do not assume a previously announced loan ceiling or application window remains active without current confirmation.

  • Interest support for eligible students during the specified moratorium period under applicable government schemes.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

8. Home loans with government interest subsidy

Eligible households may be able to combine a home loan from a participating lender with support under the Interest Subsidy Scheme of PMAY-Urban 2.0. This is not a free house or a loan issued directly to every applicant; eligibility and property conditions apply.

Key conditions to check

  • The scheme is intended for eligible EWS, LIG and MIG households, subject to income and other criteria.
  • Published guidelines describe a 4% subsidy on the eligible first ₹8 lakh of a qualifying home loan, with maximum subsidy support subject to scheme limits.
  • Loan sanction/disbursement date, household eligibility, property value, loan amount and tenure conditions matter.

The published scheme guidelines include income ceilings of up to ₹3 lakh for EWS, ₹6 lakh for LIG and ₹9 lakh for MIG. Confirm the latest operational rules and eligibility before relying on these figures.

How to proceed

  1. Read the current PMAY-Urban 2.0 Interest Subsidy Scheme guidelines.
  2. Check whether the household and property meet the conditions.
  3. Contact a participating bank or housing finance company.
  4. Ask the lender how eligibility is assessed and how any approved subsidy is applied.

FOOD BUSINESS & MICRO ENTERPRISES

9. PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME)

PMFME supports eligible micro food-processing businesses through credit-linked assistance, including support for individual units and eligible groups or common infrastructure projects. The programme is designed for formalisation and upgrading, not unrestricted personal borrowing.

Support under the scheme

  • Eligible individual units may receive credit-linked capital subsidy of 35% of eligible project cost, up to ₹10 lakh per unit, subject to scheme guidelines.
  • Eligible groups and common infrastructure projects may have different project limits and assistance conditions.
  • Applications are subject to project eligibility, lender appraisal and required beneficiary contribution.

Subsidy is linked to an eligible project and loan process; it should not be treated as cash paid in advance or as guaranteed loan approval.

Eligible micro food-processing entrepreneurs, proprietors, partnerships and qualifying groups looking to set up or upgrade an eligible unit.

Application preparation

  1. Check current scheme guidelines and eligible activities.
  2. Prepare project cost estimates, business details and required registrations.

AGRICULTURE & RURAL INFRASTRUCTURE

10. Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)

AIF supports eligible investments in post-harvest management infrastructure and community farming assets. It is intended for eligible projects and entities, rather than general personal or household borrowing.

  • The interest-subvention period can extend up to seven years, subject to scheme conditions.
  • Eligible borrowers may also qualify for credit-guarantee support under applicable arrangements.

Documents and application checklist

Exact requirements differ by scheme and lender. Use this as a preparation checklist, then follow the official scheme-specific list.

  1. 01

    Identity and bank details

Keep the identity, address and bank documents requested by the official application process ready. Never share OTPs, PINs or banking passwords.

  2. 02

    Applicant or activity proof

Depending on the scheme, you may need land or cultivation details, vendor identification, artisan/trade verification, category certificates or business registration.

  3. 03

    Project or business records

For business or project loans, prepare a purpose statement, estimated costs, quotations, project report or cash-flow details if required.

  4. 04

    Read the written loan offer

Before accepting, check the interest rate, fees, collateral, repayment dates, penalties and conditions for any subsidy or guarantee.

Important: a loan is not the same as a grant

Most loans must be repaid with interest. A government-linked scheme may provide credit, an interest benefit, a guarantee or other support, depending on its rules. Do not assume that a loan is free or guaranteed to be approved.

Never pay an unknown agent or share OTPs, PINs or banking passwords to obtain a loan. Confirm the lender and application channel before sharing personal information.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Government Loans: FAQs

Does the government give loans directly to every applicant?

No. Many government-linked schemes are delivered through banks or other participating financial institutions. The applicant must meet the scheme conditions and the lender's assessment requirements.

Are government loans interest-free?

Not necessarily. Interest rates, repayment terms and any eligible interest support vary by scheme and lender. Check the current official guidelines and written loan offer.

Which documents are required?

Requirements vary. Applicants may be asked for identity and address proof, bank details, income or category certificates, and business, farming or project documents where applicable. Follow the current official checklist for the specific scheme.

Where can I check which schemes may suit me?

Start with the JanSamarth portal for credit-linked schemes and myScheme to search government schemes. Always verify the final details with the responsible department or lender.

Does applying mean I will receive a loan?

No. Application submission does not guarantee sanction or disbursement. The scheme's eligibility rules, verification, available funds where applicable, and the participating lender's assessment all matter.

Can I get a government loan without collateral?

Some schemes provide credit without collateral subject to their rules, but this does not mean every loan or applicant qualifies. Confirm the current conditions with the official scheme and lender.

Are interest rates the same under every scheme?

No. Interest rates and charges can vary by programme, lending institution, borrower profile, loan amount and tenure. Any interest subsidy is conditional and may require timely repayment.

Should I pay an agent to guarantee approval?

No one can legitimately guarantee approval outside the official process. Use authorised portals and lenders, request written fee details, and never share passwords, PINs or one-time passwords.
