About Scholarship Scheme for Girl Children of Workers of Jute Mills/MSME JDP Units
Section 5(2)(xxii) of the National Jute Board Act, 2008, empowers the Board to “secure better working conditions and provisions and improvement of amenities and incentives for workers engaged in the jute industry.” Acting on this mandate, the National Jute Board (NJB) has introduced a scholarship scheme as a workers’-welfare measure, aimed at encouraging jute mill and MSME worker families to educate their daughters. Objectives of the Scheme: The Scholarship Scheme for Girl Children of Jute Mills/MSMEs Workers sets out to:
- Give girl children of Jute Mill/MSME workers a financial incentive on passing the Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations, encouraging them toward the minimum education needed for employability.
- Encourage workers to stay in the jute industry for longer, helping curb the high worker attrition that troubles the sector.
- Ease labour-related difficulties for Jute Mill/MSME units.
- Strengthen the relationship between mill owners and workers.
- Give workers a sense of social protection through such welfare measures for their children.
- Advance women’s empowerment through girl-child education.
