Jal Jeevan Mission

Quick Summary: Jal Jeevan Mission aims to give every rural household, school, anganwadi, and health centre a functional tap water connection through a community-driven approach, backed by water conservation and rainwater harvesting measures. No application is needed — states implement it village by village based on infrastructure assessments.

About Jal Jeevan Mission

The programme will also carry out source sustainability measures as mandatory elements — recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting.

Jal Jeevan Mission is built on a community approach to water, with extensive Information, Education, and Communication as a core component.

Objectives

1. Broadly, the Mission aims to give every rural household, school, anganwadi centre, GP building, health centre, wellness centre, and community building a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC), and to monitor these connections; 1. To prioritize FHTCs in quality-affected areas, drought-prone and desert villages, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) villages, etc.; 1. To build and ensure voluntary local ownership through community contributions in cash, kind, and/or labour, including shramdaan; 1. To help sustain the water supply system — the water source, supply infrastructure, and funds for regular O&M; 1. To build human resources in the sector so construction, plumbing, electrical, water quality management, water treatment, catchment protection, and O&M needs are met, both short and long term, while raising awareness of safe drinking water and stakeholder involvement, making water everyone’s responsibility.
