E-YUVA Scheme: BIRAC’s Innovation Fellows (for post graduates and above)

Quick Summary: BIRAC's Innovation Fellows programme funds postgraduates and PhD holders working full-time at an E-YUVA Centre for 18 months to develop commercially viable biotech products, with the goal of launching a startup. Fellows draw a monthly stipend plus an annual research grant.

About E-YUVA Scheme: BIRAC’s Innovation Fellows (for post graduates and above)

The “Empowering Youth for Undertaking Value Added Innovative Translational Research (E-YUVA)” scheme was started by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) to promote applied research and need-based (societal or industry) entrepreneurial innovation among young students and researchers. It offers funding (fellowship plus research grant), technical and business mentoring, exposure to the bio-incubation model, and orientation toward entrepreneurship, for students from undergraduate to post-doctoral level. The scheme supports two categories:

  • BIRAC’s Innovation Fellows (for postgraduates and above)
  • BIRAC’s E-YUVA Fellows (for undergraduate students)

BIRAC’s Innovation Fellows (for postgraduates and above): These fellows apply as individuals and must work full-time at the EYC. They are expected to launch biotech startups, so only proposals with potential to commercialize innovative products and technologies are considered. > Areas covered:

BIRAC Innovation Fellowship proposals may be submitted in any domain, including Healthcare, Life Sciences, Diagnostics, Medical Devices, Drugs, Vaccines, Drug Formulations and Delivery Systems, Industrial Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Agriculture, Secondary Agriculture, Waste Management, Sanitation, Clean Energy, and Artificial Intelligence/IoT/Automation applied to any of these fields. BIRAC welcomes interdisciplinary proposals from any stream that can help convert innovative ideas into biotech products and technologies in the areas above. > Nature of Proposals supported:

  • Translational research proposals to develop innovative products and technologies capable of addressing unmet needs.
  • Since Innovation Fellows are expected to launch biotech startups, only proposals with the potential to commercialize innovative products and technologies will be supported.

Number and Duration of Fellowship:

  • Each EYC can host up to 3 Innovation Fellows at a time.
  • The fellowship runs for 18 months, extendable by 6 months only for deserving cases.

Expected Deliverable:

The scheme aims to encourage young students to pursue translational research that develops innovative products and technologies addressing unmet needs. Work supported through BIRAC’s Innovation Fellows is expected to work toward

  • Individual-to-Company (I to C) conversion
  • IP creation
