Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Quick Summary: Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana gives adult women from poor, LPG-less households a deposit-free gas connection, along with a free first refill and stove. It has already helped push national LPG coverage from 62% in 2016 to nearly 100% by 2021.

About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) rolled out ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) as a flagship scheme to bring clean cooking fuel like LPG to rural and deprived households that had been relying on traditional fuels such as firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes — fuels that took a toll on both rural women’s health and the environment. Launched on 1st May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, the scheme has since evolved as follows:

  • It targeted releasing 8 Crore LPG Connections to deprived households by March 2020.
  • On 7th September 2019, the Hon’ble Prime Minister handed over the 8th Crore LPG connection in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
  • These 8 Crore connections helped lift LPG coverage from 62% on 1st May 2016 to 99.8% as on 1st April 2021.
  • The Union Budget for FY 21-22 provided for releasing an additional 1 Crore LPG connections under PMUY, with this phase offering a special facility for migrant families.
