Sarkari Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Quick Summary: PMJDY gives every Indian adult access to a zero-balance bank account bundled with a RuPay debit card, accident insurance, and an overdraft facility. It has been central to India's push for universal financial inclusion since 2014.

About Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Launched nationwide in August 2014 by the Prime Minister as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion (NMFI), Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) set out to bring every citizen into the financial fold. It delivers universal banking to every unbanked household, built on the ideas of banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured, funding the unfunded, and reaching underserved areas. To keep pushing financial inclusion, PMJDY was extended beyond 14.08.2018, shifting its focus from “every household” to “every unbanked adult”. The scheme has since been made more attractive, with (i) the OD limit raised from Rs. 5,000/- to Rs. 10,000/-, and (ii) accidental insurance cover on RuPay cards raised from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakhs. PMJDY has succeeded in widening banking penetration and financial inclusion across the country, giving weaker and low-income sections access to basic savings accounts, need-based credit, remittance facilities, insurance, and pensions.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana provides the following benefits to eligible applicants:

💰

Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA)

Any Indian citizen who qualifies for a regular bank account can open a BSBDA, which needs no minimum balance. Account holders can use bank branches, ATMs, and Banking Correspondents (BCs) to deposit or withdraw cash, though withdrawals are capped at four per month. Small Account/Chota Khata Jan Dhan Yojana lets people open small bank accounts without producing legal documents. These normally stay valid for twelve months, after which they can continue for another twelve if the holder shows they've applied for an Officially Valid Document within that first 12-month window. RuPay Debit Card with inbuilt accident insurance PMJDY issues every beneficiary a free RuPay debit card carrying built-in accident insurance of Rs. 2 lakh (Rs. 1 lakh for accounts opened before 28.08.2018). Overdraft Facility Beneficiaries can draw an overdraft of up to Rs. 10,000/- under PMJDY. Business Correspondents (BCs)/Bank Mitras BCs/Bank Mitras are retail agents banks appoint to deliver banking services away from a branch or ATM, mainly to reach far-flung rural areas. They help residents with savings accounts, deposits, payments, withdrawals, and mini statements, giving customers in remote areas hassle-free access through banks' extensive BC/Bank Mitra networks.
