National Handicrafts Development Programme: Research & Development Scheme
About National Handicrafts Development Programme: Research & Development Scheme
Operating under the Ministry of Textiles’ umbrella “National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP)”, the “Research & Development Scheme” was set up to gather feedback on the economic, social, aesthetic, and promotional dimensions of the crafts and artisans making up the handicraft sector. It sponsors or conducts surveys and studies to feed planning with useful inputs, and organises workshops, seminars, conferences, radio programmes, and more — both online and offline — to keep artisans up to date on the latest developments in handicrafts.
Key Highlights:
1. Surveys & Studies a) Surveys/studies of particular crafts, along with mapping and documenting a database of craft clusters and specific craft pockets — covering current market trends and status, existing exports, and future export potential, etc. b) Issues around availability of raw materials, technology, design, common facilities, etc. c) The socio-economic condition of artisans. d) Market evaluation studies for specific crafts, whether for domestic or overseas markets. e) Techno-economic feasibility studies and post-evaluation of various promotional projects/programmes run in the handicrafts sector. 2. Financial assistance toward registering GI crafts (including registering authorised users), preparing legal paperwork, standards, audits, and other documentation needed for labelling/certification. 3. Financial assistance to organisations developing mechanisms to protect crafts — including endangered crafts, designs, heritage, and traditional knowledge. 4. Carrying out a Census of the country’s Handicraft artisans and publishing it as a handbook/e-book for future reference. 5. Helping handicrafts exporters adopt global standards, including handicrafts marks, branding, bar coding, and similar standards. 6. Running workshops/seminars on issues specific to the handicrafts sector. 7. Evaluation/impact assessment studies of Handicrafts Schemes. 8. Need-based financial assistance to Government departments/ministries, institutes of national importance, export promotion councils, etc.
