Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan)
About Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan)
The Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation launched Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan) in April 2018, as part of the Solid and Liquid Waste Management component under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), to improve village cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste. GOBARDHAN’s core focus is keeping villages clean, raising rural household incomes, and producing energy and organic manure from cattle waste. With rural India already Open Defecation Free (ODF), GOBARDHAN has grown more important by helping villages reach ODF-plus status, a key goal of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II.
GOBARDHAN’s Waste-to-Wealth programme gives multiple Ministries/Departments — the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare (DACFW), Department of Rural Development, and Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) — a shared platform for their schemes. DDWS coordinates the scheme’s implementation and also gives States/UTs technical and financial support for GOBARDHAN projects under SBM-G.
Objectives
1. Helping villages effectively manage cattle waste, agricultural waste/residue, and other organic waste. 1. Helping communities turn organic waste — especially cattle dung — into wealth by producing manure and energy from it. 1. Creating rural livelihood opportunities and raising farmers’/rural residents’ incomes by supporting waste-to-wealth conversion. 1. Promoting rural entrepreneurship by involving entrepreneurs, SHGs, and Youth Groups in setting up and running biogas plants. 1. Promoting environmental sanitation and curbing vector-borne diseases through effective rural waste disposal.
