Journalist’s Medical Welfare Scheme – Assam
About Journalist’s Medical Welfare Scheme – Assam
Responding to long-standing demands from journalists in the State for welfare measures, the State Govt. decided to bring in a new scheme called the “Journalist Medical Welfare Scheme”. It gives financial assistance for medical treatment to Accredited Journalists identified by the Director of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) Assam under the Assam Press Correspondents (Accredited/ Recognitions) Rules, 1989, where such journalists suffer from:-
1. Complex illnesses that call for long-term and very costly treatment, organ transplants, complicated operations, or extended medical care, for instance of a cardiological/ nephrological/ oncological/ neurological/ gastroenterogical/ endoerinological nature. 2. Complicated surgery needed because of injuries from accidents and the like, including the cost of artificial replacements, where required. 3. Chronic illnesses that cannot be cured and need life-saving devices or treatment. 4. Any other grave health problem that is medically diagnosed as life-threatening. To fund this, the State Govt. opened a new Head of Accounts in the Annual Budget Estimates from the financial year 2009-10; the money under this Head of Account is administered by a committee that the Information & Public Relations Department constitutes with the following members, and D.D.O. powers are delegated to the DIPR, Assam.
The scheme gives one-time financial assistance to accredited and recognised journalists of Assam for medical treatment, covering both the journalist and their dependent family members. The assistance is paid from the interest earned on the scheme’s corpus fund.
