About District Level Sports School
Started in 2013-14 by the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat, the District Level Sports School scheme sets up district-level sports schools under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to give young athletes intensive training alongside quality schooling. Talent is spotted at events like Khel Mahakumbh and then developed with modern infrastructure, scientific methods, specialist coaching and proper nutrition, while the children continue formal school education. From an initial 9 schools (6 residential and 3 non-residential), the programme grew to 24 schools by 2017-18, serving more than 2,500 students across 21 sports disciplines. Selected athletes get accommodation, food, school uniforms, books, sports kits and equipment. Around ₹2.25 lakh is spent on each player every year on average, which includes ₹1 lakh Mediclaim security. The Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) implements the scheme.
