About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 (PMUY) traces back to May 2016, when the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched it to give women from poor households free LPG connections. The core goal is to spread clean cooking fuel like LPG among rural, deprived families that traditionally cooked with firewood, coal, or cow-dung cakes — a shift that cuts health risks for women and eases environmental pollution. PMUY 2.0 expanded the scheme’s reach further across India.

  • The scheme aimed to release 8 Crore LPG Connections to deprived households by March 2020.
  • On 7th September 2019, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India handed over the 8th Crore LPG connection in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
  • These 8 Crore connections also lifted LPG coverage from 62% on 1st May 2016 to 99.8% on 1st April 2021.
  • Ujjwala 2.0 added a further 1.6 Crore LPG Connections under PMUY, with a special facility for migrant households; the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, launched this phase in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh.
