National Solar Science Fellowship Programme
About National Solar Science Fellowship Programme
Launched in February 2011 by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, the “National Solar Science Fellowship Programme” is aimed at Indian scientists keen to work at the cutting edge of solar energy science, engineering, and technology, focusing on science, technology, and product development alongside select prestigious Indian institutions. It exists to give top-tier solar energy researchers a platform to draw on, and expand, the resources available at identified schools/institutions in India and abroad, so as to crack the complex problems around using solar energy for various purposes, including power generation. Fellowship Management Committee: The Ministry sets up a Fellowship Management Committee, chaired by the MNRE Secretary, with eminent scientists as members and the scientist-in-charge (HRD) as convener. This Committee decides which research areas the programme takes up and recommends which institutions can host the Fellowship Programme; its expert members serve three-year terms. Number of Fellowships: No more than 10 Fellowships run at any given time, though only three Fellows were picked in the programme’s launch year. Duration of Fellowship: Fellowships initially run for two years, extendable year-on-year for up to three more years depending on how the Fellow’s work is progressing. Commencement of Programme: National Solar Science Fellows form a community of researchers working at the frontier of solar energy, driven by intellectual curiosity, top scholarship, and a determination to solve the country’s current energy-security challenges through solar applications. The programme lets them draw on everything the Government offers, while in turn helping the Government crack solar energy’s technological problems and apply the results on the ground — leaving a visible mark on the country’s energy sector.
