Institutions of Eminence scheme

Quick Summary: UGC's Institutions of Eminence scheme grants ten public and ten private higher education institutions extra funding and regulatory freedom to become globally competitive. Selected institutions can admit up to 30% foreign students, set their own curriculum, and receive up to ₹1000 crore in additional government support.

About Institutions of Eminence scheme

The University Grants Commission launched the Institutions of Eminence scheme in 2017 to help Higher Educational Institutions grow into world-class teaching and research centres. It aims to give ten public and ten private Higher Educational Institutions a supportive regulatory framework so they can rise to global standards, in turn widening affordable access to quality education for ordinary Indians.

These guidelines cover Government institutions — Central Universities, Government-owned and controlled Deemed-to-be Universities, institutions of national importance such as Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Government-owned standalone institutions working under individual MoAs (such as Indian Institutes of Management), and State Universities set up by an Act of a State Legislative Assembly (together called Government institutions of Eminence).
