E-YUVA Scheme: E-YUVA Centers
About E-YUVA Scheme: E-YUVA Centers
“Empowering Youth for Undertaking Value Added Innovative Translational Research (E-YUVA)” was started by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) to promote applied research and need-based (societal or industry) entrepreneurial innovation among young students and researchers. It offers funding (fellowship plus research grant), technical and business mentoring, exposure to the bio-incubation model, and orientation toward entrepreneurship, for students from undergraduate to post-doctoral level. > E-YUVA Centers (EYCs):
BIRAC’s E-YUVA scheme runs through dedicated hubs called “E-YUVA Centers (EYCs)”, housed within a University/Institute and mentored by a BIRAC BioNEST-supported bio-incubator. EYCs anchor the programme, extending support and mentoring to students. Each EYC has a BIRAC-supported pre-incubation space offering infrastructure and equipment for basic research and experimentation by selected students, while advanced research needs are met through Bio-incubator Connect. BIRAC-supported EYCs include:
- Pre-incubation space (3,000 sq. ft. or more)
- Managing fellowships for students
- Conducting Entrepreneurial Awareness Workshops for students
Roles and Responsibilities of EYCs:
- Viewing and processing online fellowship applications
- Screening applications for eligibility and suitability
- Carrying out online Technical Review of eligible applications through Subject Experts (Reviewers)
- Shortlisting proposals for interview (F2F/Skype/telephonic) by an Expert Panel
- Communicating decisions to applicants at every stage of selection
- Seeking BIRAC’s approval on the final selection of fellows or their eligibility
- Issuing fellowship award letters to selected candidates on BIRAC’s behalf
- Releasing the fellowship and research grant received from BIRAC
- Providing mentorship, handholding, and facility access at the EYC and EYC Knowledge Partner for BIRAC’s Innovation and E-YUVA Fellows
- Monitoring targeted milestones
- Organizing periodic review meetings
- Providing mentorship and handholding for domain expertise, entrepreneurship, and activities such as IP management, mobilizing resources, and other business-development work
- Providing platforms/opportunities for interaction with experts
- Providing periodic updates and progress reports on Fellows to BIRAC
- Conducting entrepreneurial workshops
- Any other activity needed to effectively implement fellowships, by mutual consent with BIRAC
Tenure of EY Centres:
EYCs are engaged for an initial 3 years, extendable based on performance review, with annual performance evaluation. > E-Yuva Knowledge Partner:
To mentor Innovation Fellows and guide EYCs overall, BIRAC assigns each EYC a BioNEST-supported Bio-incubator, which provides handholding and mentoring to the EYC and its Innovation Fellows throughout the award period. Bio-incubators also act as brand ambassadors for the programme, helping with outreach.
