Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Quick Summary: PMMVY pays maternity benefits to women from disadvantaged backgrounds for their first two living children, with the second payout reserved for a girl child. Together with the JSY delivery incentive, a first-time mother typically receives around ₹6,000.

About Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a Centrally Sponsored flagship scheme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, built to support pregnant women and lactating mothers. It delivers maternity benefits to women from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society, covering a woman’s first two living children, provided the second one is a girl. For the first child, PMMVY pays ₹5,000/- across two instalments, and the beneficiary can also claim the cash incentive due under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) for institutional delivery, so a woman ends up with roughly ₹6,000/- on average. For the second child, ₹6,000/- is paid in a single instalment after birth, but only if that child is a girl. Miscarriage or stillbirth cases are treated as fresh cases when claiming maternity benefit under the scheme. Under the revised ‘Mission Shakti’ guidelines effective from 01.04.2022, PMMVY 2.0 goes further, offering an additional cash incentive for a second child who is a girl to encourage positive attitudes toward the girl child — so the second-child benefit of ₹6,000/- is now paid in one instalment after birth. This is meant to help improve the Sex Ratio at Birth by discouraging female foeticide. In addition, a beneficiary who experiences a miscarriage or stillbirth is treated as a fresh beneficiary for any future pregnancy.
