About Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY) was rolled out in 2009-10 to support an area-based model of development, with a focus on the all-round development of villages where Scheduled Castes form the majority. PMAGY pursues this integrated development of SC-majority villages in two ways: (a) mainly by converging the delivery of relevant Central and State/UT government schemes; and (b) by taking up activities that fall outside existing Central and State schemes, funded instead through ‘Gap-filling’ Central Assistance of up to ₹20,00,000 per village.
The scheme began as a pilot in 2009-10, selecting 1,000 villages across five states — Tamil Nadu (225), Rajasthan (225), Bihar (225), Himachal Pradesh (225), and Assam (100). Every one of these 1,000 villages has since been declared an ‘Adarsh Gram’ by its respective State Government. > What an ‘Adarsh Gram’ looks like
An ‘Adarsh Gram’ is a village where basic services reach everyone, so that even the most disadvantaged groups have their minimum needs met and inequality is kept to a minimum. Such villages have the infrastructure and basic services needed for a dignified life, giving every resident the environment to make the most of their potential.
