The “Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS)” is one of five sub-schemes under the National Social Assistance Programme, Ministry of Rural Development. It covers BPL household members aged 60 or above, applying in both rural and urban areas. On 15th August 1995, the Government of India introduced the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) as a fully funded Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the destitute — anyone with little or no regular income of their own or support from family or other sources. > NSAP currently comprises five sub-schemes:-
a) Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) b) Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) c) Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS) d) National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) e) Annapurna Scheme > Objectives of NSAP-
1. Provide social assistance to poor households facing the death, maternity, or old age of the breadwinner. 2. Guarantee minimum national standards, alongside whatever benefits states already provide or may add. 3. Ensure uniform, uninterrupted social protection for beneficiaries nationwide. > Expansion to cover all eligible BPL persons-
The scheme was widened in 2007 to cover all eligible Below Poverty Line (BPL) persons.
