About National Youth Award
Sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Award honours Indian youth for exceptional social service, aiming to push young people toward excellence in national development or social service while instilling a sense of community responsibility that sharpens their potential as good citizens. It’s given for clearly identifiable, outstanding work across development and social-service fields — health, research and innovation, culture, human rights promotion, art and literature, tourism, traditional medicine, active citizenship, community service, sports, academic excellence, and smart learning.
Objectives of the award:
- Challenging young people (aged 15-29) to achieve excellence in national or social service.
- Encouraging young people to build a sense of responsibility toward their community, sharpening their own potential as good citizens.
- Recognising outstanding work done by young people for national development and/or social service.
- Recognising outstanding work done by voluntary organisations engaging youth in national development and/or social service.
Ceremony Details:
- The award is presented each year at a special ceremony, on a date and time announced in advance.
Selection Process:
- First, a Screening Committee chaired by the Joint Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, reviews every application and puts forward three times as many names as there are awards to give.
- The Central Selection Committee, headed by the Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Government of India, then examines all the Screening Committee’s recommendations and makes the final award selections, with the power to also weigh any other case purely on its merits.
