Krushy Aranya Protsaha Yojane (kapy)

Karnataka
Quick Summary: Karnataka's Krushi Aranya Protsaha Yojane (KAPY) sells subsidized seedlings to farmers and pays Rs 125/- per surviving seedling over three years. The incentive encourages farmers to grow trees on their land and expand tree cover.

About Krushy Aranya Protsaha Yojane (kapy)

In 2011-12, the Karnataka Forest Department started the ‘Krushi Aranya Protsaha Yojane (KAPY)’ to motivate farmers and the public to expand forest and tree cover. Farmers buy seedlings at subsidized rates to plant on their own land. For every seedling still alive, they are paid an incentive of Rs 35 at the end of the first year, Rs 40 once the second year is over, and Rs 50 once the third year is over, so that they look after the seedlings for at least three years.

At Rs 125/- per seedling, the incentive more than covers what the farmer spends on buying and planting it, and it adds up to a sizeable amount when many seedlings are planted. Beyond this payment, farmers can also earn well from the mature trees through fruits, seeds, fodder, firewood, pole, timber, and other useful products.
