FRESH-IT (Farmer’s Research & Enterprise in Spice Holdings for Innovative Technology) is a subcomponent of the Integrated Scheme for Export Promotion & Quality Improvement in Spices and Research and Development of Cardamom, run by the Spices Board under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It encourages spice farmers to innovate and improve on their farms — developing promising spice varieties and new, affordable post-harvest machinery/equipment for the spice-farming community — thereby raising the production, productivity, and quality of spices. The scheme follows the modalities and guidelines cleared by the Competent Authority under the Integrated Scheme for Export Promotion & Quality Improvement in Spices and Research and Development of Cardamom during the 15th Finance Commission period (2021–22 to 2025–26).

The Secretary of the Spices Board will set…

The Secretary of the Spices Board will set up a Technical Committee chaired by the Director (Dev.), Spices Board, drawing members from ICRI, ICAR-IISR, relevant SAUs of the reporting State, and the concerned Regional Officer of the Spices Board for production-side matters; post-harvest equipment innovations will instead be evaluated by the existing Regional Evaluation Committees. Assistance follows an MoU with the Spices Board.

The Board officer who identifies the innovation forwards the case to the Director (Dev.) through the proper channel for preliminary scrutiny by a nominated team of officers; qualifying cases then go to the technical committee for evaluation.

Grant-in-aid up to a maximum of ₹7,50,000/- per innovation, released in two installments of ₹3,75,000/- based on progress/completion of the innovation, as recommended by the technical committee set up to evaluate farmer-led development of new clones/cultivars/varieties and machines/post-harvest equipment for improving spice quality.
