Integrated Child Development Services: Chandigarh
About Integrated Child Development Services: Chandigarh
The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, launched on 2nd October, 1975, is a flagship Government of India programme and among the world’s largest and most distinctive efforts in early childhood care and development. It stands as the nation’s chief expression of commitment to its children and nursing mothers, tackling both the need for pre-school non-formal education and the vicious cycle of malnutrition, morbidity, reduced learning capacity and mortality. Children aged 0-6 years, pregnant women and lactating mothers are its beneficiaries.
In the U.T of Chandigarh, the ICDS project began on 1.8.1979 with 24 anganwadi centres to bring down mortality, morbidity and malnutrition among children. Today, 3 ICDS Projects with 450 anganwadi centres serve an approx. population of over 5.50 lac across peripheral areas, villages, colonies and slum areas.
