GEN-NEXT Support for Innovative Startups (GENESIS)

Quick Summary: GENESIS is MeitY's ₹490 crore, five-year initiative to fund and mentor startups in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities through Ideation, Pilot, Investment, and Deep-tech support components, worth up to ₹1 crore per startup. It aims to reach and support over 10,000 tech startups via roughly 50 Implementing Agencies.

About GEN-NEXT Support for Innovative Startups (GENESIS)

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, runs “Gen-Next Support for Innovative Startups (GENESIS)” to discover, support, grow, and accelerate promising startups in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, emphasising collaboration among startups, government, and corporates to drive digitisation built on inclusivity, accessibility, and affordability — ultimately boosting employment and economic output. It offers funding (across Pilot/Proof-of-Concept, Investment, Early-stage, and Deep-tech categories), capacity-building, mentorship, ecosystem linkages, and community-building support to students, faculty, academic institutions, aspiring entrepreneurs, startup companies, incubators, Centres of Excellence (CoEs), accelerators, mentors, investors, and corporates engaged in innovation-led growth. MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) implements the scheme through roughly 50 Implementing Agencies (IAs), preferably based in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The scheme’s total budget is ₹4,90,00,00,000/- (₹490 Crore) over 5 years, aiming to impact and consolidate 10,000+ tech startups over that period and build an inclusive startup ecosystem. > Objectives:

  • Consolidating MeitY’s existing schemes and assets for more efficient asset use, better returns on scheme spending, and stronger overall startup support.
  • Building Tier-2/Tier-3-focused funding to critically support Pilot/Investment, Early-stage, and deep-tech startups, with implementation partners and startups selected by experts through a defined, structured process.
  • Community-building initiatives — workshops, boot camps, conferences, etc. — to strengthen the ecosystem and build recognition for MeitY’s startup-related initiatives, all aligned with MeitY’s major programmes like India AI, ISM, and India Stack.
