About Chief Ministers Special Rural Development Fund (CMSRDF)
Since 2000 – 2001, the Government of Meghalaya has been running the “Chief Minister’s Special Rural Development Fund” as a part of its special Rural works programme. The programme mainly aims to create wage employment and build public assets of social and economic value with the active involvement of people at the grassroots. The works taken up vary widely; they are chosen by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and NGOs, and carried out by local durbars and beneficiary organisations under the oversight of each district’s Deputy Commissioner. Eligible works include rural roads, footpaths, footbridges, drainage, culverts with Hume pipes, improvement of water sources, community halls, multi-purpose buildings, provision/improvement of rural electrification, school buildings and playgrounds, as well as purchase of equipment and new vehicles like mortuary vans, ambulances, school buses and oxygenated vans for carrying live fish. Innovative eco-friendly projects will also be considered. Projects should not be highly technical, and costs should be kept low through convergence or through contributions from the people. Benefits for Local Area Development The Chief Minister’s Special Rural Development Fund applies to the state’s rural and semi-rural areas.
