Arundhati Gold Scheme
About Arundhati Gold Scheme
Social ills concerning the girl child, such as child marriage, female foeticide and dowry, trouble many regions of India. Assamese society, however, has long been fortunate in staying free of such practices. Even without a dowry custom in Assam, every girl’s parents wish to give her something when she marries. Whatever their social or financial standing, parents hope to shower their children with love, blessings and presents, yet for many these hopes go unrealised because of limited means. Gold has always been seen as both auspicious and a store of value, and parents feel that gifting gold jewellery raises their daughter’s social and economic standing. Objective: From the financial year 2019-20, the Government of Assam chose to launch a New Scheme “ARUNDHATI”. The scheme is meant to help parents of modest financial means who, like any parents, wish to present their daughter with some auspicious gold at her wedding. To share in the happiness of these families, the Government gives Rs. 40,000/- to the daughter as a blessing for buying Gold.
