Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship
About Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship
The Department of Science and Technology (DST), together with the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), set up the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship in 2017 to recognise and support Indian nationals at publicly funded institutions who are doing translational engineering research capable of turning into real technological products, devices, components, or processes. At its core, the fellowship pushes for excellence in engineering, innovation, and technology development. It’s named for the late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India and a champion of Indian technological self-reliance, and it is administered by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) with INAE handling implementation.
Scope:
The fellowship spans every area of engineering, innovation, and technology.
Duration:
- Initially awarded for three years, extendable by up to two more based on performance.
- The maximum total tenure is 5 years.
Expected Outcome:
The fellowship applies only to translational research aimed at commercialisable or deployable technology, pilot-scale or field-trial-ready technology, a filed/sold/commercialised patent, or a working model/prototype for demonstration and trial — in addition to, not instead of, scientific publication.
Fellowship Numbers:
Up to 10 fellowships are awarded each year.
