Educational Assistance To Children Of Prisoners (Pursuing Professional Course)

Kerala
Quick Summary: Kerala's Social Justice Department grants ₹100,000 per student, covering annual and hostel fees, to BPL children of prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment or death who are pursuing merit-based professional degrees in Government or Aided colleges.

About Educational Assistance To Children Of Prisoners (Pursuing Professional Course)

Kerala’s Department of Social Justice runs “Educational Assistance to Children of Prisoners (Pursuing Professional Course)” as a support measure for sons and daughters of convicted persons. Under G.O (RT) No. 322/2014/SJD dated 08-05-2014, the state government set up this scheme to fund the education of prisoners’ children up to degree-level courses. A conviction punishes more than the offender: children often suffer the most, losing access to their rights, facing financial hardship and finding few chances to study. Measured against today’s educational costs, the help previously offered to such children enrolled in degree-level professional courses at Government / Aided colleges fell short. Because professional courses carry widely varying fee structures, the State Government has set the assistance at ₹100,000/- per student, an amount that covers annual fees & hostel fees.
