Aama Kuni Pilaa

Odisha
Quick Summary: Aama Kuni Pilaa is an Odisha Women & Child Development initiative promoting early stimulation and responsive parenting for children aged 0-3 years. Delivered through Anganwadi Centres, it provides Kuni Calendars, low-cost toy kits and training for ICDS workers.

About Aama Kuni Pilaa

Introduced by the Department of Women & Child Development, Government of Odisha, “Aama Kuni Pilaa” centres on early stimulation and responsive parenting for every child aged 0-3 years, always in the child’s best interest. True to the meaning of the name “Aama Kuni Pilaa”, the idea for this distinctive initiative springs from the unconditional love and care that parents, grandparents and caregivers give to little ones. Because a young child’s brain grows so fast, early moments spent with mother, father and grandparents mould learning and development for life. By three years, 80% of the brain has developed, and enriching interaction with caregivers reinforces neural connections, supporting the child’s all-round growth. > Objectives:

The scheme sets out to encourage joyful, child-friendly learning led by parents at home, by building a stimulating early environment within each household. Its aims are:

  • Strengthening the abilities of parents and caregivers by sharing responsive parenting messages with them across various platforms.
  • Training ICDS officials/ caregivers on why the early years matter and on play and learning activities suited to young children.
  • Making parents, caregivers and the wider community aware of how important the early years are, and drawing in fathers & male caregivers through Men-streaming.
  • Having parents & caregivers keep young children engaged with inexpensive, locally relevant, child-friendly toys.
  • Encouraging love, talk, touch & play by the Anganwadi worker with children under three, using toys, lullabies, stories and interactive conversation and activities.
  • Reaching families equitably with suitable parent & caregiver friendly IPC, IEC/ SBCС materials.

A. Kuni Calendar: The calendar uses pictures to show stimulating activities matched to a child's age and stage, covering developmental areas such as psycho-social, physical & motor, language, creative & aesthetic aspects. It is split into three age bands: under one year, 1-2 years & 2-3. The AWW hands it to parents every month on Ankur Diwas so that it reaches them on time, and guides parents and caregivers to interact with their children and keep track of their cognitive and physical progress. B. Toy Kit: The Aama Kuni Pilaa scheme releases money for making toys at Anganwadi centres. DSWOs pass on the guidelines and funds to CDPOs, who in turn transfer them to AWWs, so that low cost, child friendly toys for children under three can be made together with parents and the community. The AWW holds discussions with the Matru Committee/ Jaanch committee/ parents to spread awareness of the scheme and its advantages and to keep them engaged. While framing district-level Toy Kit guidelines, the toy catalogue enclosed as Annexure-A to this guideline may be consulted. The operational details and budget breakdown for making toys are provided in Annexure-B for reference. C. Training: A State level training on Aama Kuni Pilaa will be held at HETC, Bhubaneswar, where all Als, retired officers such as CDPOs/ DSWOs, and Freelancers will be trained. These trained State Level resource persons will then run in-person training at district level. For CDPOs, LSs & AWWs, district level trainings will take place at the district's AWW and Helper Training Centres.
