Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar
About Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar
Science and technology serve as vital engines of progress for society, with scientists playing a crucial role in relentlessly pursuing truth and generating new knowledge — the backbone of a nation’s continuous development. Recognising their exceptional, inspiring contributions matters because it motivates others to follow suit.
Objective
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP) exists to honour the notable, inspiring work of scientists, technologists and innovators — whether individuals or teams — across various fields of science, technology, and technology-driven innovation. It stands among India’s highest honours in this space. Eligibility extends to scientists, technologists and innovators in government service, private organisations, or working independently, who have delivered path-breaking research, innovation or discovery in any area of science, technology or technology-led innovation; people of Indian origin abroad whose exceptional contributions have benefited Indian communities or society are equally eligible.
The awards shall be given in the following four categories
a) Vigyan Ratna (VR) — recognising lifetime achievements and contributions in any field of science and technology. b) Vigyan Shri (VS) — recognising distinguished contributions in any field of science and technology. c) Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB) — recognising and encouraging young scientists for exceptional contributions in any field of science and technology. d) Vigyan Team (VT) — recognising a team of three or more scientists/researchers/innovators for an exceptional contribution achieved together in any field of science and technology.
