Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
About Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, run by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, gives poor and vulnerable families cashless hospitalisation cover of ₹5,00,000 per family per year for secondary and tertiary care. The Prime Minister of India launched it in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on 23rd September 2018.
Ayushman Bharat marks a shift away from a fragmented, sector-by-sector approach to healthcare toward comprehensive, need-based care. It aims to bring transformative change across prevention, promotion, and ambulatory care at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, through a continuum-of-care model built on two linked components:
- Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs): These deliver comprehensive primary healthcare close to home — maternal and child health services, care for non-communicable diseases, free essential medicines, and diagnostics — while encouraging preventive care and healthier habits to cut the risk of chronic disease.
- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY): The scheme’s second component, better known as PM-JAY, offers cashless health insurance cover of up to ₹5,00,000 per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation to poor and vulnerable families.
