ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship

Quick Summary: AI-RTF gives young ASEAN researchers a fully funded 2-6 month fellowship, worth ₹60,000 a month plus travel and contingency support, to conduct research at an Indian institution and build India-ASEAN scientific ties.

About ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship

The ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship (AI-RTF) is a fellowship programme set up by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, under the ASEAN-India Science & Technology Development Fund (AISTDF). It gives promising young researchers and scientists from ASEAN member states — Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam — the chance to carry out research at an Indian research or academic institution.

Objectives:

AI-RTF was set up to:

  • Encourage scientists and researchers from ASEAN nations to move to India and work at Indian R&D or academic institutions, sharpening their research skills in the process.
  • Build networks and information exchange between Indian and ASEAN researchers, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.

As a bonus, awardees may also find Indian co-supervisors for their PhD or Master’s research once they return home.

Number of Fellowships:

Fifty fellowships are awarded each year to young ASEAN scientists and researchers to affiliate with Indian academic and R&D institutions.

Fellowship Duration:

Each fellowship runs for two to six months, and no extension or shortening of that period is entertained once awarded.

Management & Execution:

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), New Delhi, manages and coordinates AI-RTF.

Eligible Research Areas:

The chosen research topic must be ASEAN-centric and align with the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology, and Innovation (APASTI), falling under one of these broad disciplines: • Agricultural Sciences • Biological and Medical Sciences • Chemical Sciences & Engineering • Computer Science & Engineering • Physical Sciences and Mathematics • Ocean, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences • Engineering Sciences • Materials, Minerals and Metallurgy • Science Policy/IPR Management/Technology Transfer & Commercialization • Other multi-disciplinary areas of Science, Technology and Innovation aligned with APASTI.

Note: All natural and engineering sciences fields, including mathematics and statistics, are covered — except humanities and behavioural sciences.
