Women Scientist Scheme-A

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Quick Summary: Women Scientist Scheme-A (WOS-A) funds women with a career break to conduct up to three years of research in science and engineering, covering a monthly fellowship of ₹31,000-₹55,000 depending on qualification, plus HRA and project costs up to ₹30 lakh. It helps prevent brain drain and supports women's re-entry into S&T careers.

About Women Scientist Scheme-A

Offered by MoST, this research grant lets women candidates—preferably those with at least a two-year career break and no regular employment—pursue research in frontier areas of science and engineering, helping them explore re-entry into the profession. It funds a well-defined project proposal for up to three years, covering the applicant’s fellowship along with the cost of small equipment, contingencies, travel, and consumables; institutional overhead charges are provided separately. WOS-A support spans 5 disciplines: i) Physical & Mathematical Sciences (PMS), ii) Chemical Sciences (CS), iii) Life Sciences (LS), iv) Earth & Atmospheric Sciences (EAS), and v) Engineering Technology (ET). The scheme plays a key role in gender mainstreaming, preventing brain drain from the S&T system while training and retaining women within it. It initially offers a chance to work as a bench-level scientist, eventually opening pathways to permanent positions in Science & Technology.
