Tagore National Scholarship for Cultural Research

Quick Summary: The Tagore National Scholarship for Cultural Research offers up to 25 scholars a year up to two years to research the unexplored resources of Ministry of Culture or other cultural institutions. Scholars from academic/government backgrounds retain their parent-organization pay, while others receive a ₹50,000/month honorarium, plus contingency, HRA and settling allowances.

About Tagore National Scholarship for Cultural Research

The Tagore National Scholarship for Cultural Research aims to reinvigorate institutions under the Ministry of Culture (MoC) and other identified cultural institutions by encouraging scholars/academicians to affiliate with them for projects of shared interest. The scheme hopes to bring fresh knowledge capital into these institutions by having scholars/academicians draw on specific institutional resources for their projects and take up research tied to the institutions’ core objectives, ultimately enriching them with new creative and academic strength. > Nodal Institutions (Participating Institutions):

The Scheme covers institutions under the Ministry of Culture (MoC), as listed in the Guidelines, and may extend to others in future. It also covers Non-MoC institutions holding cultural resources such as manuscripts, artifacts, antiquities, books, publications and records, letting them engage distinguished Scholars to work on their holdings and publish further. Nodal institutions, whether MoC or non-MoC, fall into four broad groups based on their specialization, focus and resources: 1. Group-A: Archaeology, Antiquities, Museums & Galleries 2. Group-B: Archives, Libraries and General Scholarship 3. Group-C: Anthropology & Sociology 4. Group D: Crafts, Performing/Visual/Literary Arts > Scope of the Scheme:

The Scheme lets identified cultural institutions engage Scholars of outstanding merit to research and unlock their unexplored resources. For ease of monitoring, accounting and accountability, one of the institutions listed above serves as the ‘Nodal Institution’ for each project, with the Scholar attached/anchored to it. > Duration of the Scholarship:

  • The Tagore Scholarship runs for up to 2 years.
  • In exceptional cases, the institution may recommend to the NSC either a one-year extension or a shorter tenure than two years, based on its assessment of the work’s quality; however, an extended Scholar forfeits any remuneration, including contingency, for that extra period.
  • The Scholarship’s tenure is counted in months and years from the date of joining.

Number of Scholarships:

  • The scheme envisages granting up to 25 Scholarships each year.
  • Each nodal institution can normally receive 1, or up to 2, Scholarships a year, though MoC retains discretion to relax this cap.

Administration of the Scheme:

The Ministry of Culture decides, from time to time and in consultation with participating institutions, how many Scholarships each institution administers, weighing factors like the size of its untapped holdings, existing physical facilities, its capacity to guide and inspire Scholars, its track record in publication and research, and the need for research/study in a given area. Up to 2% of the total allocation may be set aside for the scheme’s administration — monitoring, implementation, inspection and review of Scholars’ research — through outsourcing or consultants.
