SMILE – Comprehensive Rehabilitation For Welfare Of Transgender Persons

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Quick Summary: This SMILE component provides a ₹13,500 annual pre-matric or post-matric scholarship to Transgender students studying in classes IX to XII, aiming to reduce dropouts and support their education. Applicants need a Transgender Certificate from the National Portal and must not be receiving any other central or state scholarship.

About SMILE – Comprehensive Rehabilitation For Welfare Of Transgender Persons

To help reduce dropout rates and support their educational goals, Transgender students in secondary school (classes IX and X) and senior secondary school (classes XI and XII) receive financial assistance in the form of scholarships.

Objectives

  • To financially assist Transgender students in class IX and above so they can complete their education.
  • To help Transgender students continue studying and build the skills needed to earn a livelihood and secure a dignified place in society, given the physical, financial, psychological, and mental barriers they often face in pursuing education and living with dignity — barriers that can otherwise keep their latent talents from ever being realized.
  • The scholarship goes to students enrolled in a government or private higher secondary school, college, or university — including residential institutions run by the Government, and eligible private institutions notified transparently by the concerned State Government or Union Territory Administration.
  • Technical and vocational courses are also covered, including Industrial Training Institutes/Centres affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) at the XI and XII level, and Polytechnics, though courses shorter than one year fall outside the scheme’s scope.
  • Every eligible Transgender applicant is considered for the scholarship; since the number of scholarships available each year is capped, selection is based on the total marks scored in the previous academic year, as shown on the mark sheet.

Terms and Conditions

  • Continuation of the scholarship depends on the student’s satisfactory academic progress and conduct. Should the Head of the Institution/School report at any point that the student has, through their own default, failed to progress satisfactorily or has engaged in misconduct — such as taking part in strikes or being irregular in attendance without proper permission — the sanctioning authority may cancel the scholarship or suspend further payments for whatever period it considers fit.
  • Breaching school discipline or any scholarship terms may lead to suspension or cancellation of the scholarship.
  • Should a student be found to have secured the scholarship through a false statement, the scholarship is cancelled immediately, the amount already disbursed is recovered by the Ministry along with penal interest as per the applicable rules, and the student is blacklisted, permanently barred from any future scholarship scheme.
  • A Transgender student must refund the scholarship amount if they discontinue the studies for which it was granted partway through the academic year.
