Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme – For Host Institutions

Quick Summary: The PMRC Scheme for Host Institutions invites top-ranked government higher education institutions and national laboratories to host globally experienced PMRC Fellows and support their research with infrastructure, funding routed through the institution, and in-kind contributions. It builds India's research capacity by anchoring global expertise within leading domestic institutions.

About Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme – For Host Institutions

The Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme is a Central Sector Scheme run by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, designed to bring distinguished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals from abroad into premier government higher education institutions and national research laboratories in India to carry out cutting-edge research. Built around three core pillars — Lead Institutions, Host Institutions, and PMRC Fellows — the Scheme is operationalised through leading government (Central and State) Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), National Laboratories, and Research Institutes across India, identified by an Empowered Committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. Each thematic area has one designated Lead Institution, which supplies strategic direction, coherence, and quality assurance across the PMRC ecosystem so that PMRC research stays mission-aligned, unfragmented, and geared toward national impact. Lead Institutions also assess how ready and suitable prospective Host Institutions are within their respective thematic areas. Host Institutions that show a strong research, development, and innovation (RDI) environment, close industry-academia ties, a track record of commercialising patents, and solid institutional research support are the ones that engage PMRC Fellows. Participating Host Institutions are expected to make in-kind contributions such as access to laboratories, libraries, research facilities, instrumentation, computational resources, a collaborative academic setting, and publication and institutional support. They may also cover open-access publication charges and patenting costs arising from jointly produced RDI outputs.
