About Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

Launched by the Department of Fisheries; Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying; Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) aims to bring about ecologically healthy, economically viable, and socially inclusive development of India’s fisheries sector.

PMMSY is meant to drive a Blue Revolution through sustainable, responsible development of fisheries in India, backed by a total investment of ₹20,050 crore for the holistic development of the sector, including fishers’ welfare. It runs across every State and Union Territory over five years, from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25. The Union Budget 2023-24 announced a new sub-scheme under PMMSY, backed by ₹6,000 crore, to support fish vendors, fishermen, and micro and small enterprises in improving value chain efficiencies and expanding the market.

Objectives of PMMSY

1. Tap into the fisheries sector’s potential sustainably, responsibly, inclusively, and equitably. 2. Lift fish production and productivity through expansion, intensification, diversification, and productive use of land and water. 3. Modernise and strengthen the value chain, including post-harvest management and quality improvement. 4. Double the incomes of fishers and fish farmers and generate meaningful employment. 5. Grow the fisheries sector’s contribution to Agricultural GVA and exports. 6. Secure fishers and fish farmers socially, physically, and economically. 7. Put in place a robust fisheries management and regulatory framework.
