About PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi)

The “PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi)” scheme, run by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, works to bring street vendors into the formal economy and widen their economic prospects by offering collateral-free working capital loans, an interest subsidy, and incentives for digital transactions. It was rolled out on 1st June 2020 as a central sector scheme, helping vendors relaunch and grow their businesses while also encouraging digital payments to widen financial inclusion. The term street vendors covers hawkers, thelewalas, rehriwalas, and others engaged in small-scale vending. The scheme seeks to bring street vendors into the formal fold and create fresh avenues for this sector to climb the economic ladder. Street vendors form a key part of the urban informal economy, making goods and services available at affordable prices right at city dwellers’ doorsteps. Depending on the region, they go by names such as vendors, hawkers, thelewala, rehriwala, theliphadwala, and so on. What they sell ranges from vegetables, fruits, ready-to-eat street food, tea, and pakodas to bread, eggs, textiles, apparel, footwear, artisan goods, and books/stationery, while their services span barber shops, cobblers, pan shops, and laundry services.
