About Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme
The Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme seeks to keep girl students in school after the primary stage by encouraging enrolment and cutting dropout at the senior secondary and higher secondary levels. It takes its name from Mai Bhago, among the bravest of Sikh women warriors, who led Sikh soldiers against the Mughals in 1705 and became a hero of that battle for her courage and leadership.
Many girls in Punjab stop studying after the 8th standard because their schools are far from home. Without cheap transport, getting to school is hard, since most rural families cannot buy vehicles or bicycles for their daughters. The Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme helps these schoolgirls carry on with their studies.
