Maa-Badi / Maa-Badi Day-Care Centre Scheme
About Maa-Badi / Maa-Badi Day-Care Centre Scheme
Introduced in 2007–2008 by the Tribal Area Development Department, Government of Rajasthan, the “Maa-Badi / Maa-Badi Day-Care Centre Scheme” brings basic primary education, nutrition support, and health and sanitation awareness to out-of-school children of the Scheduled Tribes (ST), Kathodi, and Sahariya communities living in remote tribal areas. Tribal children between 6 and 12 years of age who live where the nearest school is 1.5–2 km away receive free schooling (classes 1st to 4th), wholesome meals, uniforms, and learning materials. The Tribal Area Development Project Office runs the scheme with community involvement, and local educated tribal youth and women are engaged as staff. > Objectives:
- Each Maa-Badi Centre is to enrol 30 tribal children in the 6 to 12 year age group, with girls given priority.
- Children on the rolls are served free breakfast and mid-day meals.
- Every child is to receive uniforms, shoes, socks, ties, belts, and sweaters.
- Steady schooling is meant to stop the children of agricultural labourers from migrating.
- Mothers of enrolled children take turns cooking the meals and are paid an honorarium.
- The centres connect tribal women with adult literacy programmes.
- Awareness is spread about government schemes relating to health, nutrition, and sanitation.
- Local Village Development Committees run the centres, supervised by technical staff.
