Arun Pig Development Scheme

Arunachal Pradesh
Quick Summary: Launched in 2019-20, the Arun Pig Development Scheme of Arunachal Pradesh's Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development supports pig-rearing farmers and SHGs through crossbreeding and scientific piggery, with priority to women and poor farmers.

About Arun Pig Development Scheme

Introduced in the financial year 2019-20 by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, the “Arun Pig Development Scheme” centres on pig rearing. Pigs hold a special position among livestock because they are raised largely by socio-economically weaker groups, particularly in states such as Arunachal Pradesh where non-vegetarian food is widely preferred and Pork is especially popular. Compared with other livestock, pigs can generate quicker economic returns for farmers owing to natural traits like high fecundity, efficient feed conversion, early maturity and a short generation interval. Pig farming also needs only modest investment in housing and equipment. Objective

  • Raising the productivity of Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous pigs through genetic improvement by crossbreeding with exotic breed(s) up to a desired mix of exotic and local inheritance,
  • Upgrading indigenous pig rearing practised by rural people through selective breeding,
  • Generating livelihood income
  • Keeping well-planned crossbred animals on farmers’ fields
  • Expanding piggery husbandry and creating support systems to spread pig rearing across rural areas
  • Making sure that breeds brought in, and crossbreds bred and spread in the state, suit local environmental conditions and emerging climatic challenges,
  • Reinforcing support systems and sector development in feeding, housing and health care, in addition to value addition and marketing of produce through value chain development.
  • Promoting scientific rearing and encouraging farmers to take up integrated piggery farming.

Important Features

  • Since grassroots farmers showed little interest in credit-linked schemes and these had a poor success rate, a fresh approach to piggery development was proposed in the state through direct intervention by the Department of AHV&DD, GoAP, covering upgradation of genetic resources and related peripherals; this new and innovative scheme was put forward for Budget Announcement 2019-20 for sustainable development and poverty alleviation of Farmers through Pig Rearing in potential districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Earning livelihoods, bettering indigenous pig rearing among rural people through selective breeding, and keeping well-planned crossbred animals on farmers’ fields.
  • Growing piggery husbandry and building support systems to spread pig rearing in rural areas.
  • Making certain that the breeds introduced, and the crossbreds produced and spread in the state, are suited to local environmental conditions and emerging climatic challenges.
