About Agnipath Yojana
The Ministry of Defence runs the AGNIPATH scheme to bring young people into the Armed Forces on short-term service, building a younger, more technologically capable and dynamic military. It offers a competitive financial package, skill development, and military training to motivated, patriotic youth wanting to serve the country, delivered through the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. Selected recruits, called Agniveers, serve for four years under the respective Service Acts. The scheme is meant to bring down the Armed Forces’ average age and bring in people attuned to modern technology, while also producing disciplined, skilled individuals who can contribute to nation-building once their service ends. It’s also designed to keep a healthy mix of experienced hands and young recruits within the Forces.
