Integrated Sheep Development Scheme

Jammu and Kashmir
Quick Summary: J&K's Integrated Sheep Development Scheme, launched in 2020-21, supports sheep/goat units and shearing units through participatory and subsidy modes, aiming for about 1200 units and 2400 jobs.

About Integrated Sheep Development Scheme

Launched by the J&K Government in 2020-21, the Integrated Sheep Development Scheme (ISDS) aims to generate income by setting up sheep & goat units. The Sheep Husbandry Department implements it, under the monitoring of the concerned Director.

Assistance is offered for these activities – a) Setting up Sheep/goat units of 10 ewes/does in participatory mode b) Setting up Sheep/goat units of 20-200 ewes/does in subsidy mode c) Setting up shearing units Beneficiaries may be an Individual / Group of Individuals / Self Help Groups / Cooperative Societies / FPOs, etc., and the aim is to cover 20% SC/ST and 10% women beneficiaries. The guidelines remain valid until 31st March 2023 or until a new set replaces them, whichever comes first.

The scheme is innovative & self-sustaining, since new units are continually set up in a cycle using livestock retrieved from earlier beneficiaries. To run a unit, the beneficiary needs basic infrastructure & access to grazing.

About 1200 sheep/goat units will be set up, creating jobs for around 2400 people. To upgrade the genetics of local sheep, 200 elite crossbred imported merino sheep will be brought in, producing more than 8000 elite lambs; this is expected to lift carcass yield from the current 18 kg to 21 kg and fine wool output from 2 Kg to 2.5 Kg per sheep.
