About Guru Shishya Parampara

Under the “Guru Shishya Parampara Scheme”, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, works through Zonal Cultural Centres to safeguard and promote rare and disappearing Classical or Folk/Tribal art forms. Young talent is trained in its chosen art under the skilled guidance of Gurus.

In Indian culture and religion, the Guru-Shishya Parampara is the line of teachers and disciples linked by a spiritual bond and mentorship, through which a Guru’s knowledge and teachings pass to the disciple.

The Ministry of Culture started this scheme in 2003-04 to keep the Guru-Shishya Parampara alive and to encourage talent in music, drama and other arts. Each zonal cultural centre identifies great masters of Music and Dance and of folk and tribal art forms and attaches pupils to them. The government provides financial assistance and scholarships so that these arts are learned in a systematic way.
