About Financial Aid For Providing Hostel Facility To Transgender Students
The Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, introduced the scheme “Financial Aid for Providing Hostel Facility to Transgender Students”. Transgender persons hold the same aspirations as everyone else in society, yet their schooling is often cut short: 58% of Transgender students leave school before finishing 10th grade, and 24% of Transgender students quit even before completing 9th grade. Severe harassment that makes study impossible, along with other negative gender-related experiences at school, drives this pattern. To help such dropouts return to and continue their education, the Social Justice Department already runs a scholarship scheme for Transgender learners. Even so, the community continues to face social exclusion, and many members are unable to accept job offers or carry on studying simply because they cannot find a place to stay. Attitudes have improved somewhat, but reluctance to rent a house to transgender persons is still widespread. As a result, transgender students who hold the scholarship are often compelled to abandon their studies. To tackle this problem, the Department of Social Justice launched this scheme, under which the Transgender community receives ₹4,000/- per month as financial assistance towards rent for hostel facilities/accommodation.
