Community Canning & Training On Fruit Preservation
About Community Canning & Training On Fruit Preservation
Under the Community Canning and Training scheme for fruit preservation, the office of the Deputy Director of Agriculture (Fruit Preservation) Assam teaches people, and women in particular, how to make preserved products such as Jam, Jelly, Pickles, Squash, Sauce, Chutney etc. from seasonal fruits and vegetables available locally. Training takes place both in the field and at the centres themselves, with centre staff guiding participants. There are currently 21 (Twenty one) Community Canning and Training Centers spread across 19 (Nineteen) districts (the Diphu center is controlled by the District council), and each is led by an officer of Sub- Divisional Agricultural Officer (SDAO) rank. These centres have become well liked by the public since they were set up, and many people in their areas have benefited from them in preserving fruits and vegetables. Besides offering facilities for making various preserved items, the centres run training programmes that have greatly helped many ladies’ groups, organisations and N.G.O’s. The centres also earn some revenue from these activities, which is paid into the Government account from time to time.
