About Scheme for Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games
The Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, runs the “Scheme for Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games” to honour coaches who have made exceptional contributions to coaching and athlete development. Objectives:
- To honour coaches who have consistently produced outstanding international-level sportspersons.
- To motivate coaches to dedicate themselves to raising sporting performance standards and bringing international glory to India.
Sports Disciplines Covered: The award covers coaches from:
- Olympic sports disciplines.
- Non-Olympic sports disciplines recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
- Indigenous sports recognized by the Government of India.
Award Categories:
- Dronacharya Award (Regular)
- Dronacharya Award (Lifetime Contribution)
Number of Awards:
- No more than 5 awards are typically given in a calendar year.
- Of these, 2 are reserved for Lifetime Contribution in Coaching.

Eligible coaches can apply directly through the portal, without needing recommendations from nominating authorities.
The government may additionally nominate up to two deserving candidates.

Exclusions / Who Is Not Eligible
1. The applicant is a recipient of the Arjuna Award (Lifetime) (earlier known as Dhyan Chand Award).
1. The applicant is involved in canvassing for the award.
1. A coach associated with doping violations becomes eligible only after completion of the prescribed punishment, suspension, or ban period. Achievements during the suspension period will not be considered. If an inquiry is pending, the concerned sportsperson's achievements will not be considered.
