About Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar Scheme for writing original book in Hindi

To encourage the writing of original Hindi books and give a boost to the official language, the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, runs the “Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar Scheme for Writing Original Books in Hindi.” Under it, Indian citizens are honoured in the following ways:

  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for an original Hindi book on Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, Biology, Energy, Space Science, Medicine, Chemistry, Information Technology, Management, Psychology, or contemporary themes such as Liberalisation, Globalisation, Consumerism, Human Rights and Pollution.
  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for original Hindi books on Law, Police Research, Forensic Science, Criminology, Police Administration and related subjects.
  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for an original Hindi book covering Culture, Religion, Arts, Heritage and similar themes.
  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for original Hindi books written by authors from the ‘C’ region, across all the subject areas listed above.
  • Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for books translated into Hindi, covering translated works on classics and on subjects tied to culture, art and heritage.

Objective:

(A) Central government ministries, departments, offices, undertakings and banks also conduct official work involving technical subjects, yet the scarcity of Hindi books on technical, scientific, judicial, police, criminology-research, police-administration, cultural, religious, artistic, heritage and legal topics makes it harder to expand Hindi’s use in official work. Personnel additionally struggle with official work in Hindi because they are unfamiliar, or only partly familiar, with the Hindi vocabulary of these fields. (B) A fresh category has been added to encourage original Hindi writing among authors from the ‘C’ region. (C) Translation also plays a key role in bringing English-language and scheduled-Indian-language knowledge and literature to Hindi-speaking readers. Several strong translated works submitted in past years could not be recognised because no award category existed for them. In line with the Home Minister’s vision of strengthening ties between Indian languages and Hindi, a new category has now been added for books translated into Hindi from English and other Indian languages. The Department of Official Language therefore launched this scheme to promote both original writing and quality translation work in Hindi across the subjects noted above. (D) The Department of Official Language alone serves as the nodal department for the various national-level Hindi award schemes run by different Central Government Ministries/Departments. Going forward, any Ministry/Department planning a new Hindi-related award scheme must first consult the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, to prevent overlapping award schemes.
