National Service Scheme
About National Service Scheme
Launched in 1969 as a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, the “National Service Scheme” (NSS) opens the door for students at senior secondary schools (+2 level), colleges, universities, and technical institutions to take part in government-led community service. NSS volunteers get involved in regular community work, special camps, national-level programmes, and awareness drives spanning health, education, the environment, national integration, disaster response, and social welfare — all guided by the principle of “Education through Service,” which teaches students by having them serve society. Over 7.4 crore students across India have benefited from NSS since it began.
