Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Quick Summary: The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme pays Rs.12,000 a year to 1,00,000 meritorious, economically weaker Class IX students annually, selected via state-level MAT/SAT tests, to keep them in school through Class XII.

About National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme

Launched in 2008 as a Central Sector Scheme by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India, the “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme” awards scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections, so as to stop them dropping out at Class VIII and push them to carry on into secondary school. The scheme sets out to award 1,00,000 scholarships to gifted/meritorious students whose parental income, from all sources, does not exceed ₹3,50,000/- a year at the time awardees are chosen. Each State/UT is given a fixed quota of scholarships for the relevant Class VII/VIII age group, and reservations apply according to each State/UT’s own norms, which vary from place to place. Paid out yearly, the scholarship goes to regular students entering Class IX at a Government, Government-aided, or local-body school, running for a maximum of four years. This scheme has been extended for a further 5 years, covering the 15th Finance Commission cycle from 2021-22 to 2025-26.
