National Fellowship For OBC Students
About National Fellowship For OBC Students
Background The University Grants Commission (UGC), under the Department of Higher Education (DoHE), rolled out “National Fellowship for OBC Students” in financial year 2014-15 to widen access for Other Backward Classes (OBC) students to higher education culminating in degrees such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. Its purpose is to fund quality higher education for OBC students working toward M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees at universities, research institutions, and scientific institutions. Beyond making them eligible for the Lecturer posts vacant across colleges and universities, this preparation also positions them to seize the expanding opportunities — both within India and abroad — that come with the changing economic landscape.
Scope of the Scheme Under this scheme, 300 Junior Research Fellowships have been earmarked annually since 2014-15, joined by 300 Senior Research Fellowships from 2016-17, for OBC students. JRF intake was subsequently raised from 300 to 1000 a year for candidates pursuing advanced M.Phil./Ph.D. studies and research after qualifying in either of these tests:
i. National Eligibility Test ) – Junior Research Fellowship (NET-JRF) of UGC (for Humanities/Social Sciences) or ii. UGC-Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (UGC-CSIR) NET-JRF Joint Test (for Science)
Coverage extends to every university/institution recognised by the UGC, and the Commission itself runs the scheme, mirroring the UGC Fellowship pattern already in place for M.Phil./Ph.D. research scholars. The 1000 slots come in addition to whatever number of OBC students already gain UGC Fellowship seats under the Government’s standard reservation policy.
